Quarterback Preview:

This is the first of all positions that are being previewed for the upcoming 2009 Florida State Seminoles Football Team:

Starter (Christian Ponder #7 (RS JR) 6-2 217lbs): There is no indication right now that Jimbo is unhappy with Ponder. In fact Jimbo has stated that Ponder could be the best he has ever coached at the QB position during Booster Club speeches. That is saying something since he has coached a #1 NFL Draft Pick in Russell, and some other solid QBs at LSU. Ponder is a leader and he is tough, but he needs to get better at looking off the DBs and cut down on his INTs. If the general improvement that usually occurs from year to year happens then there is no reason that he can’t be All-ACC this year.

Back-Up (E.J Manuel #3 (RS FR) 6-4 223lbs): E.J. will get significant playing time this year and I hope he gets put into situations during games when it matters and not just “scrub time” with 5 min left in the 4th quarter. From all indications he is a super talent and will be an excellent QB. He needs some practice during the player only team coordinated events this summer since he didn’t participate in spring practice due to an injury. Look for E.J to push for the starting job next year even though Ponder will be a RS SR. I have a good feeling about this kid and remember he is only one play away from being the man.

3rd String (Corey Eddinger (SO) 6-0 218lbs): Corey got valuable playing time during the spring practice and game due to Manuel’s injury. Seemed nervous in the Spring Game and didn’t show what he was capable of doing. If he just stays within the game and doesn’t lose ball games if or when he is called upon he has the potential to be a solid QB. We may see him playing some with 5 minutes left in ballgames that FSU is up by three TDs but if all the games are close it will be next spring when we hear from Mr. Eddinger.

4th String (Will Secord (FR) 6-3 204lbs): Most likely Mr. Secord will be redshirted and that is a good thing. A Ponder type QB who has a 40 yard dash time of 4.66. He comes from Texas where toughness is a must in High School much like Florida. Our First glance at Mr. Secord will be next spring and let us keep our fingers crossed he isn’t utilized before then. Along with Manuel, Secord is key to getting back to having experienced QBs in the starting rotation at FSU.

Note: (D’Vontrey Richardson #6 (JR) 6-1 214 lbs): is officially listed as a Safety on the Florida State Official Athletic Website Roster. If he doesn’t turn professional in Baseball then he will most likely be at Safety, but FSU did use him effectively in crucial situations and we may see a little of him back at QB for a wrinkle. I doubt it because Manuel needs the reps but you never know because it worked.

This is the best FSU has looked at QB since before Rix. FSU has talented, bright, and tough young men who are capable of leading the Offense back to Conference Championship contenders.

Ouch!

Richard Goodman (RS SR) #9 Wide Receiver for FSU has been suspended indefinitely by Head Coach Bobby Bowden. The investigation for the Campus brawl that involved numerous wide receivers has concluded that Goodman was the player who threw the chair into the crowd causing significant injuries to a female student.

Honey Do's

Just another rainy day in Titusville Florida where I live and the wife sends me out grocery shopping while she takes care of some things at home. So I grab my son, who is a Gator Fan by the way and we head off to the local Publix. I pull into the parking lot just behind another car and we park adjacent to each other and simultaneously head inside.

The lady was wearing a white Titusville High School T-Shirt with #2 Haulstead on the back. Now as much as I wanted to say something to her I did not because I do not wanna be a stalker. I just took the opportunity to give my son a little business on how Haulstead was going to be one of the players who will be bringing FSU back to the head of college football.

As I continued one of my favorite pastimes at the checkout cashier of giving my son grief because he is a Gator Fan, Willie Haulstead himself walked into Publix. Now I have to be honest I am not 100% sure it was him but I am 95% sure it was. I kind of kick myself for not saying anything to him but never the less it was one of the best trips to Publix I have ever had.

He looked great and by proxy since he is a hometown player he is officially now my favorite player on FSU. I really think he will make an immediate impact on FSU this year. The guy has awesome hands and he is thick. He will punish DBs.

Good Luck Willie, thanks for making my trip to Publix...........lol

No Joy for Surrency

Corey Surrency lost his appeal for another year of eligibility by the NCAA. While his stats did not make your jaw drop, he was a tremendous blocker and did the little things that helped the team be successful this past year. He will be missed.

He will be given a chance by an NFL Team. He is to athletically gifted and he is a tenacious blocker at the WR position. Successful NFL Teams have WR that can block and he will be given an opportunity and deservedly so. I hope he finishes his degree.

Good Luck Corey!

Jimbo in Orlando

Jimbo Fisher spoke in front of the Seminole Booster Club of Greater Orlando.

Orlando Sentinel's "The Chopping Block" by Andrew Carter is a recap of that visit.

My Take:

Jimbo Fisher is the right person to take over FSU after Bowden, whom I admire and respect.

Ecstatic that David Spurlock (SO #79)and Rhonne Sanderson (SO #73) are mentioned as beasts on the OL considering Datko, Hudson, and McMahon are monsters. Depth in the lines is always critical.

Proactive approach to teaching ALL the players not just the WR group on proper decision making. Great Process improvement.

Really encouraged on his positive attitude toward Mickey Andrews.

Finally, the comments concerning Ponder are good. I believe him, since by all appearances he made the right call on Ponder over Weatherford which was a very tough decision at that time but the correct choice.

Star Date 14 May 2009

So begins a journey into Florida State Football from one fans perspective that will prove to be factually sound and entertaining. I must admit I am tired of the negative energy that the media tends to dwell upon for any sports both college and professional. Constructive criticism will be welcomed but ignorant bashing will get you the title "Gator Fan" Get-R-Done!
