Starter (Christian Ponder #7 (RS JR) 6-2 217lbs): There is no indication right now that Jimbo is unhappy with Ponder. In fact Jimbo has stated that Ponder could be the best he has ever coached at the QB position during Booster Club speeches. That is saying something since he has coached a #1 NFL Draft Pick in Russell, and some other solid QBs at LSU. Ponder is a leader and he is tough, but he needs to get better at looking off the DBs and cut down on his INTs. If the general improvement that usually occurs from year to year happens then there is no reason that he can’t be All-ACC this year.
Back-Up (E.J Manuel #3 (RS FR) 6-4 223lbs): E.J. will get significant playing time this year and I hope he gets put into situations during games when it matters and not just “scrub time” with 5 min left in the 4th quarter. From all indications he is a super talent and will be an excellent QB. He needs some practice during the player only team coordinated events this summer since he didn’t participate in spring practice due to an injury. Look for E.J to push for the starting job next year even though Ponder will be a RS SR. I have a good feeling about this kid and remember he is only one play away from being the man.
3rd String (Corey Eddinger (SO) 6-0 218lbs): Corey got valuable playing time during the spring practice and game due to Manuel’s injury. Seemed nervous in the Spring Game and didn’t show what he was capable of doing. If he just stays within the game and doesn’t lose ball games if or when he is called upon he has the potential to be a solid QB. We may see him playing some with 5 minutes left in ballgames that FSU is up by three TDs but if all the games are close it will be next spring when we hear from Mr. Eddinger.
4th String (Will Secord (FR) 6-3 204lbs): Most likely Mr. Secord will be redshirted and that is a good thing. A Ponder type QB who has a 40 yard dash time of 4.66. He comes from Texas where toughness is a must in High School much like Florida. Our First glance at Mr. Secord will be next spring and let us keep our fingers crossed he isn’t utilized before then. Along with Manuel, Secord is key to getting back to having experienced QBs in the starting rotation at FSU.
Note: (D’Vontrey Richardson #6 (JR) 6-1 214 lbs): is officially listed as a Safety on the Florida State Official Athletic Website Roster. If he doesn’t turn professional in Baseball then he will most likely be at Safety, but FSU did use him effectively in crucial situations and we may see a little of him back at QB for a wrinkle. I doubt it because Manuel needs the reps but you never know because it worked.
This is the best FSU has looked at QB since before Rix. FSU has talented, bright, and tough young men who are capable of leading the Offense back to Conference Championship contenders.
